Help me put it into words: language and communication
Place: Montessori Palau Montgrí
"... this construction is not the result of conscious work, but takes place in the depths of the unconscious. The child begins this work in the shadow of the unconscious; there he develops language and it is fixed as a permanent acquisition." Maria Montessori
- How should we talk to our child? How should we listen to them?
- How should we set boundaries?
- How can we help them express their emotions?
- How can we be a good role model for our child?
- What resources do we have to help them communicate?
- How can we choose a good story? What songs should we sing?
- What happens when there is more than one language in the family or social environment?
- Do they pick up everything they hear? What do we do about swear words?
- If we go beyond simple vocabulary... are children that age capable of learning about the different species of sharks or ancient Greek monuments?
- How can we encourage them from the time they are babies to understand that conversations have various participants?
- How does discussing them in their presence affect them? How should we do it?
The foundations of language are created during the first years of life and this facilitates the creation of a good bond between parents and children. The quality of your child's language will be influenced by the richness of the language in your child’s environment and by your response in relation to their efforts to speak. With simple and natural interaction and responding to your child, you will see how they become a person who can communicate with confidence.
